We accompanied Lee, a friend from Kuantan to check out a used Renault Kangoo (aka Goo) in Sunway today. I got to know Lee through the Kangoo Club Malaysia as I had always liked the car despite it being labeled a bread van and ugly. I also liked another unpopular car back in the 80s, the Citroen BX 19 . It's shape was like something out of Star Wars.
We picked Lee up at 1.30pm from the Kelana Jaya LRT station. This dedicated fella has been Goo-hunting for a few months now. He has tested cars in JB and KL/PJ a few times now and he came over by coach. Just as we pulled up at the used car lot it rained heavily. Among the Bimmers and Mercs we saw the metallic orange Sportif Goo . Yeah it stands out like a sore thumb.
The first thing you realise when you sit down in the back seat is how much cabin space there is. This Goo came with leather seats, body kit, alloy rims and 2 airbags. Next we took turns to test-drive the Goo. Nic loved the Goo for its sliding doors. After haggling over the price we tested a 2001 Renault Scenic . Again the cabin space was ample and being a 1.6 liter it was more responsive than the 1.4 liter Goo. We left the lot at about 3pm and sent Lee to the Pudu bus stand. Of the Goos he has tested this is very much the real deal. RM35,500 down to RM33,000 for a 2005 Kangoo Sportif edition is a good catch. If all goes well he should be initiating the purchase by this weekend.
As for me, I am still pondering about the maintenance costs as continentals tend to be a bit less durable than Japanese makes. But on the safety aspect the Goo has earned a 4 (out of 5) star Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) safety rating. The 2001 Scenic also got a 4-star rating but the 2003 Scenic II scored 5 out of 5. Hmm, what about the Protons? Barely 3-stars.
We stopped by the Tropicana City mall on the way home to stock up on a few food essentials but ended up buying none. First Nic had her fun at the inflatable slides and later we checked out a trike (tricycle) go-kart, BMX and mountain bike 3-in-1 machine by KMX Karts . It had three wheels (one in the rear and two in front) and you steered using the handlebars. I gave it a spin and it was cool. It definitely is more comfy than the pressure one has to endure on a small saddle of a MTB or race bike. And how much for great fun and exercise? The adult model will set you back RM3000.
